Petroleum spirit, also known as gasoline or petrol, is a flammable liquid fuel that is derived from petroleum. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons with a boiling point range between 30°C and 205°C, and typically contains between 5 and 12 carbon atoms per molecule.

Petroleum spirit is used primarily as a fuel for internal combustion engines, such as those found in automobiles, motorcycles, and small aircraft. It is also used as a solvent for a variety of purposes, including in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, and other chemical products.

The composition of petroleum spirit can vary depending on the source of the crude oil and the refining processes used to produce it. However, it typically contains a mixture of straight-chain and branched-chain hydrocarbons, as well as small amounts of other compounds such as oxygenates, nitrogen-containing compounds, and sulfur-containing compounds.

While petroleum spirit is an important and widely used fuel, it can also pose significant health and environmental risks. The combustion of petroleum spirit produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, as well as other air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds. The production, transportation, and use of petroleum spirit can also result in spills and other environmental impacts.  It has a boiling point range between 30°C and 205°C, a density between 0.71 and 0.78 g/cm3, and a flash point between -40°C and -60°C.
